Privacy Policy

This policy is written to comply with the General Data Protection Regulation, or GDPR, and is in place primarily for folks from the EU who visit my site. For those who don't know, the GDPR requires that we be more transparent online as to what information we collect from people who visit our sites.

Things are very simple here.

What and Why
(information and how I use it)

The type of information captured at this site and through Google Analytics includes certain non-personally identifiable information, such as the type of browser you are using (e.g., Firefox, Internet Explorer), the type of operating system you are using (e.g., Windows or Mac), your IP address, search terms that led you here, and the domain name of your Internet service provider.

This information is used to help me understand the location of my core audience, what types of posts and articles are important to my readers, and how to better define the marketing strategy that I use for advertising my books.

If you post a comment to the blog or correspond with me through this website or blog, you will have to give me your email address. If you enter a contest and win a prize, I will need your mailing address to deliver the item to you. This information is used to correspond directly with you and for no other purpose.

You will NOT be automatically added to a subscriber list of any kind, either through email or direct mail. In regards to mailing addresses, once I have delivered the contest prize to you and you have confirmed receipt, I delete your information from my records.

Third Party Services
(because we all use them)

I, and my Squarespace host site, provide services to third parties, which may involve collecting your personally identifiable information. These include social media features and widgets such as the Share button. These features may collect your IP address, which page you are visiting on my site, and may set a cookie to enable the features to function properly. These features are either hosted by a third party or hosted directly on Squarespace. Your interactions with these features are governed by the privacy policy of the company providing the relevant feature.

To be clear: wherever you are working with a third party service on this site, the privacy policy governing the collection of your personally identifiable information shall be as set forth in such third parties’ privacy policies.

(not the kind you eat):

You can read Squarespace's Cookie Policy here and their privacy policy here. Please see my section above on Third Party Services for how cookies are used in conjunction with social media features and widgets.

Newsletter subscriptions
(one of those aforementioned third party services)

Since newsletter hosts are a third party service that collects your information, I think it's important that you know which mail service I am using so you can check their privacy policies.

I use MailChimp for my newsletter subscription host, and you can read their privacy policy here. I do not share your email addresses with other parties, nor do I add you to a subscription service without your permission. If you subscribe to my newsletter, you must first enter your email address. A confirmation email will be sent to you. Unless you follow the directions on the confirmation email, you will not be subscribed to the newsletter.

You are free to unsubscribe at any time either through MailChimp, or by contacting me personally through my contact page.

(not the kind that live under bridges)

Everyone is expected to play nice here. In cases of harassment, you forfeit any right to anonymity. I will turn your information over to the proper authorities.

Changes to this Policy

This Privacy Policy is effective as of 25 May 2018 and will remain in effect except with respect to any changes in its provisions in the future, which will be in effect immediately after being posted on this page.

I reserve the right to update or change this Privacy Policy at any time. If this is relevant to your interests, you should check this Privacy Policy periodically. Your continued use of the Service after I post any modifications to the Privacy Policy on this page will constitute your acknowledgment of the modifications and your consent to abide and be bound by the modified Privacy Policy.
